AMECEA CHAIRMAN, RT. REV. CHARLES SAMPA KASONDE, ARRIVES IN NAIROBI FOR 21ST PLENARY ASSEMBLY

The Chairman of the Association of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa , Rt. Rev. Charles Sampa Kasonde, arrived in Nairobi today at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport ahead of the 21st AMECEA Plenary Assembly.

Bishop Kasonde was received by members of the Assumption Of Mary Umoja Catholic Church choir and officials from the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops,AMECEA,Secretariate and Journalists.

Speaking after his arrival, the Bishop expressed joy at being in Kenya.
“I am very happy to be here in this country. I am also delighted about the upcoming Plenary Assembly. I believe this assembly will be one of a kind, especially for the young people,” he said.

The 21st AMECEA Plenary Assembly is scheduled to take place from 19th to 26th July 2026 at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa, Nairobi.
Bishops from the 9 AMECEA countries and two Associate Countries are expected to reflect on pastoral priorities, youth engagement, evangelization, and synodality in the region.
Rt. Rev. Charles Sampa Kasonde is the Bishop of Solwezi, Zambia, and the current Chairman of AMECEA.
Bishop Kasonde is known for his focus on youth formation, vocation promotion, and strengthening the Church’s presence in mining communities. As AMECEA Chairman, he has emphasized collaboration, listening, and mission in the spirit of synodality.
His leadership at this Plenary is expected to guide deliberations on how the Church in Eastern Africa can better accompany young people and respond to current social challenges.

The AMECEA Plenary Assembly is held every 4 years and serves as the highest decision-making body for the region. This year’s theme is expected to highlight the role of the youth and the family in the life of the Church.
